Vidyasagar

Ishwar Chandra was born in a Brahmin family in Bengal at a time when British rule was firmly established and Bengali society was ridden with superstition and meaningless ritual. Child marriages were common and child widows were not allowed to remarry. The lower classes were considered untouchable.

Ishwar Chandra was educated in the Sanskrit college and earned the title Vidyasagar (sea of learning). He also gained proficiency in English. He worked in educational institutions, wrote Bengali text -books for primary schools and opened schools for girls. He campaigned for widow remarriage and helped sufferers in famine irrespective of their caste and creed. He passed away in 1891.

A great Bengali poet said that Vidyasagar "had the wisdom and genius of an ancient sage, the courage of an Englishman and the heart of a Bengali mother."
